Note to future self: December is crazy busy. Plan ahead.
…because I did not this year. Let’s not talk about how much I spent in expedited shipping. (2020 goal: no more procrastinating! ha!)
Jordan and I got away for a weekend in Steamboat sans kids to start of the month. I had mixed feelings about leaving them home with Grandma, as we have so much fun as a family in Steamboat, but (not surprisingly) we ended up having a great time, enjoying a few awesome meals out, skiing a ton, and catching up on sleep. Meanwhile, the boys were home loving their time with Grandma. Win-win!
The following weekend, I finally took my AIARE Level One course “Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain” in Breckenridge while Jordan held things down on the homefront. It’s been on my to-do list for 6 years, and it felt good to finally get it done. It was my second experience with Colorado Adventure Guides, and I was very impressed. The course left me wanting to learn more about snow science and avalanche safety. It felt surprisingly good to be in a classroom learning again, and outside applying what we learned. (If you want to read about what goes on in an avalanche course, the NYT just published this great piece.)
By the time I got home from the AIARE course, I was ready for some family time and I’m glad I won’t have a night away from the boys until Jordan and I head to BC in February.
On the home front, this month we spent a lot of time outside playing with trucks in the snow and building dams in the gulch. Also adorable: Alistair insisted on taking me swimming for my birthday.
Things slowed down on the reading front for me (because, it’s December for crying out loud). I’m still working my way through, and loving, Last Child in the Woods, and took a lot of good ideas from The Montessori Toddler (2020 goal: toy rotation for my sanity).
Happy New Year, everybody.
